Before becoming a full-time writer, Atinuke was a travelling story-teller and performer. Her children’s debut, Anna Hibiscus, has become an enchanting series of stories about the everyday life of a little girl living in a modern-day African city, vibrantly illustrated by Lauren Tobia. In 2012 Anna Hibiscus was included in Time Out New York's Top 50 Best Books for Kids; "a book that deserves to become a classic". It was also a 2011 Boston Globe Honor Book for Excellence in Children's Literature. Anna Hibiscus’ growing popularity on both sides of the Atlantic has meant that she also features in her own picture books (also illustrated by Lauren Tobia) which makes her accessible to a younger audience.
Atinuke's second series of chapter books is centred on an African village boy, No.1 Car Spotter. As well as writing fiction, she is developing her picture book voice and is also working on a stunning illustrated non-fiction title called Africa. Her most recent picture book, Baby Goes to Market, has been named a 2018 Charlotte Zolotow Award Honor Book. Atinuke is currently working on a new young fiction series inspired by the woods and fields on the wild and beautiful north Pembrokeshire coast where she lives with her two sons.
